Nell Schofield's STORY
why you are Australia's Environmental Crusader
Nell has travelled to both poles and many points in between in search of the meaning of life. What she has discovered on her life's journey is that we are an intrinsic part of nature, not above or beyond it. Armed with this truth, she regularly puts herself on the line for environmental causes such as action on climate change and protecting water resources. As a custodian of land in Central NSW that has recently come under a coal exploration licence, Nell has been propelled to ramp up her activism. She is on the Committee of the Running Stream Water Users Association and is also the media liaison for this grass roots community group which marches under a banner that reads; 'Coal for a Decade? Or Water For Life?'. The crusade continues.

Nell Schofield, Running Stream, NSW

How do you Currently help the environment?
Nell is a founding member of the Running Stream Water Users Association which marks 20 years of activism this month (April 2011). To celebrate she created a sub-branch for kids called the Puggles Club (pugglesclub.blogspot.com). The mission of the RSWUA is to protect the water resource of the Running Stream area in NSW from the ravages of coal mining. Nell is also one of Al Gore's Climate Project presenters and has given many talks on the issue of climate change all around Australia since being anointed by the Goricle in 2007. She was a City of Sydney Cycling Ambassador for the year 2010 publicly promoting bike riding as a clean green transport option. She speaks at public events like 'Walk Against Warming' (Sydney 2010) and will M.C. the Sydney Climate Rally (2nd April 2011). In order to offset her own carbon emissions, Nell plants trees on her country property aiming for an eventual total of 10,000 trees to cover the CO2 footprint of an average human life span.
What is your dream for the environment?
Nell regularly throws coins into the Wishing Well on Cherry Tree Hill in the hope that humans will turn their backs on coal fired power and embrace sustainable energy. This is important not only for the survival of the human race but for all the voiceless creatures with whom we share the planet.
